Cannonball Dave Kafton

September 28, 2010

Dave built this HD single, belt drive bike for the Cannonball.  He knows one or two things about how to do things in a shop…

But he’s been having trouble with the spokes on the rear of his bike. He’s a big guy, and it is a small bike.  I’m sure he’ll sort it out, but for now he has been breaking them at the rate of 1-2 per day.  Check out his ingenious method to repair them by bending the broken spokes into a U shape and then hooking it to a different broken one.

When I was hanging around bicycle velodroms, you would see wheels that were copper wired and soldered where the spokes were crossed. I see he was going this with the zip tyes after the fact.

I was at HOT Springs and saw your bikes and I loved the rear brake set up. What is that off of???

Hi Doug. I think that Dave made some of the parts on his rear brake, and some came from the junk yard. You might be able to get more info from his site here:

What a beautiful bike, but I’m not a big fan of non original anything yet for myself and I want white tires and a leather helment! And a 1912 phone book. Heheheh. Thanks and best wishes, Paul
